This guide is for the Texas Carbon Valved Cat-Back Exhaust System for the Ford Mustang GT.
It applies to the wireless valve control system included with our valved exhaust systems for the Ford Mustang GT. The remote that ships with your exhaust is paired at the factory and only needs a battery, which is covered below. In rare cases pairing can be missed during production, and this guide covers that too.
This guide covers pairing in any scenario where it is needed. That includes a replacement remote, an additional remote, a remote that has stopped responding, or any other situation where the remote and control module need to be paired. The steps are the same in every case.
Whatever your situation, we recommend contacting us before you begin. Email support@texascarbon.co with a few photos of your control module and remote, and we will walk you through it personally to make sure everything is done correctly. The steps below look straightforward, but we would much rather guide you directly than have a small misstep turn into a problem.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN: CHECK THE REMOTE BATTERY
The remote uses a CR2032 coin cell battery and never ships with one, whether it came with your exhaust or on its own. A missing, weak, or incorrect battery will cause pairing to fail even when every step is done correctly, so handle this first.
- Open the remote housing. On the bottom middle of the remote there are two slits that can be gently pried to pop the housing free from the circuit board.
- If a battery is already installed, confirm it is marked CR2032. If it is anything else, or if its age is unknown, replace it with a fresh CR2032.
- When installing a battery, slide it into place on the circuit board with the positive side matching the + symbol next to the battery slot, then reassemble the housing.
- The remote will not light up on its own when a battery is inserted. Press the remote buttons and confirm the indicator light comes on with each press. If it does not, contact us before proceeding.
- With the indicator light confirmed, press each remote button and check whether the exhaust valves respond. You will hear the valves actuate, and you can see them move by looking into the pipe. Remotes that ship with an exhaust are paired during production, so if the valves open and close, your remote is already paired and you are done. Replacement and additional remotes will not be paired yet, so if the valves do not respond, that is expected.
If the valves did not respond, continue to the pairing procedure below.
OPENING THE CONTROL MODULE
- On top of the control module, locate the Texas Carbon logo. It is laser-etched on a thin metal plate held in place with double-sided adhesive.
- Peel the plate off. Underneath you will find four Phillips head screws.
- Remove all four screws and separate the housing to expose the circuit board inside.
FINDING THE LEARN BUTTON
On the circuit board, locate the white button on the perimeter. This is the learn button used for pairing.
Some earlier modules have a black button near the center of the board instead. If your board does not have a white button, use that one.
PAIRING THE REMOTE
Your wireless remote has two buttons, one on the top and one on the bottom. You will assign one to open the exhaust valves and the other to close them.
- Press the learn button on the board. The red light comes on, which means it is ready to assign a button.
- Press the remote button you want for Open. It is now set to open.
- Press the learn button again. The red light comes on a second time, ready for the next one.
- Press the other remote button for Close. It is now set to close.
- Pairing is complete. The button you assigned first opens the valves, and the other closes them.
Once pairing is finished, reassemble the housing and secure the four screws. The logo plate only covers the screws, so if the adhesive no longer holds it can be left off without affecting how the system works.
IF SOMETHING DOES NOT WORK
Recheck the battery first and confirm the remote's indicator light comes on when a button is pressed. If pairing still fails with a fresh CR2032 installed, stop and reach out to us. We are glad to help, and we would rather get you taken care of than risk an issue with your setup.
